Lambuth University is a small, coeducational, liberal arts university, located in Jackson, which is a city in the US state of Tennessee, that serves as the county seat of Madison County, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 60 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Lambuth was established in 1843, when the Memphis Annual Conference of the Methodist Church received a charter from the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, granting the authorization for the establishment of a college for women which would be known as the Memphis Conference Female Institution (MCFI). The institution received its current name in July, 1991, after it was renamed as Lambuth College, in 1923, in honor of pioneer Methodist missionary bishop, Rev. Walter R. Lambuth, M.D.
Lambuth's athletic teams are known as the Eagles and they compete in NCAA Division II, for various sports, for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are blue and white and their mascot is, obviously, the Eagle.
Among Lambuth University's noteworthy alumni, there are: Tia Sillers - Grammy Award-winning songwriter, James W. Moore - nationally acclaimed author and preacher, Tommy Scott - playwright/author, Ron Dixon - former player in the National Football League for the New York Giants, plus few others.
